Ponca City: Day 1

Today was the commencement of the racing at the Ponca City national. Some good racing has gone on for sure. My buddy Shane Cobb had the fourth moto of the day, in which he got 15th or so. Ponca has some pretty long motos going on for every class. 10 lap motos in 100 degree heat is not easy.

My first Collegeboy moto was today, race number 13. It's safe to say that I was a bit nervous, but once the gate dropped it was just another race. I spun like crap off the concrete start. The last time I practiced concrete starts was at MTF a couple years ago. After my start I just tried picking people off and keeping it on two-wheels.

I passed some people and was in 11th place. My favorite pass was when I jumped past someone on the huge triple. Yeah!!

It seemed like the race was never going to end. My dad showed me that I had two laps left, so I knew I just had to keep focused for about 4 more minutes. There's this one jump that's a single-tabletop. I was jumping all the way over it and railing the berm afterwards. There was some mud between the landing and the turn.

Luck would have it that I jumped a little bit too wide and lost traction with my front wheel in the mud, which caused me to lose control and do a superman on my bike! I crashed like that in the superman position...

It took me a couple kicks to get the bike going again, and I was feeling soooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOooooooooooohot!!!

My crash caused me to get lapped, and all I had to do was finish off the lap to finish. When I got off the track the officials pulled off the first 10 bikes, and I was one of them. I got the VIP treatment with cold water and wet towels. Oh my god, I needed that so badly...

I finished 16th in that moto.

I don't have any more motos today because they're only going up to moto 26, which is what you get when every moto is 10 laps long!

Shane's getting a good workout today, doing three motos. I'm going to have the same privilege tomorrow!

Later. -Greg
